This webinar explores the University of Vienna as a historical site and showcases innovative approaches to Holocaust remembrance with young learners developed within the CU REMEMBER project. It highlights activities with primary and secondary school students designed to make historical sites and the past meaningful for different age groups.
The webinar presents activities for
- Remembrance education in primary schools – connecting the past and present at the Campus of the University of Vienna: by Chris Gary and Thomas Troy (Vienna University Children’s Office)
Primary school students explored the University of Vienna campus through a child-friendly guided tour, learning about key personalities such as Marianne Beth and Marie Jahoda and visiting the Marpe Lanefesch memorial, while reflecting on the questions of what, how and why we remember.
- Interrupted Academic Lives: The impact of the Nazi era on the University of Vienna trough ten biographies: by Veronika Schallhart and Thiemo Kronlechner (University of Vienna)
Upper secondary school students first engaged in an interactive campus scavenger hunt supported by an app and then researched the biographies of individuals expelled from the University of Vienna during the Nazi period, producing videos documenting their stories and conducting interviews with descendants or experts.
- A Sound Foundation for Remembrance Education – Introducing Primary School Children to Historical Realities: by Katharina Wurzinger and Florian Edlinger (GEDENKDIENST – Association for historical and political education and international dialogue
This presentation offers insights into introducing primary school children to historical realities through age-appropriate methods that foster early historical thinking and reflection. It presents the pilot “History Awareness Week” program, in which participants explore Vienna’s past through diverse life stories and engage with history using a variety of approaches and activities.
This webinar is particularly valuable for educators and practitioners interested in using historical sites and interactive methods to engage young audiences with remembrance and human rights education.
