Several days of a brand new partnership

One Saturday per year there is the “Kids Researchers Day” of the Children's University in Tübingen where children can take part in different workshops; these workshops are offered by the faculties at their respective institutes.

The Kids Researcher Day

This year the Kids Researchers Day took place at the 11th July – and there were guests: within the framework of our Mentoring Partnership-project Eglė Daukšaitė and Skirmantas Bajoras, representatives of the new founded Children's University in Kaunas/Lithuania (Kaunas University of Technology/KTU), visited Tübingen’s Children's University respectively Michael Seifert, Tina Schäfer and Patricia Götz (Tübingen University/TU)

At a sunny morning we welcomed our guests in front of the University’s main building to spend the whole Saturday at the Kids Researchers Day: in two groups we visited workshops of astronomy, cardiology, zoology, ophthalmology and neurology, about supraconductors, hypnosis as well as Indian dance and theatre. All in all there were 17 workshops which pertained to 12 different topics; the number of participants per workshop varied between 5 and 25 children so there was a good variety of examples how such workshops can be organised and implemented. Besides, it is always a pleasure to visit the Kids Researchers Day and watch the groups while working. Afterwards we summarised the day, gave feedback, talked about the different impressions and had a drink in the garden of a pub.

Kaunas first Children's University

The next meeting took place at the university and was dedicated to reports, presentations and formal as well as informal questions. This meeting started with Eglė’s presentation of Kaunas’ first Children's University which took place a few weeks ago. She showed pictures and told us about the lectures, KTU’s experiences and their plans for the future. Besides, one of the biggest newspapers in Lithuania published an article about “students” graduation and “diplomas”. Then we gave a short introduction about TU’s activities within EUCU.NET and had enough time for other topics which had to be discussed or questions to be answered.

Visit at the Tübingen Kids-Uni

Tuesday was “Children's University-day”. This year the “Tübingen Kids-Uni” took place for the 8th time; Eglė and Skirmantas visited the last lecture in 2009, called “Why do some people become aggressive and evil?” (psychology, medicin). The lecturer was Michael Günter, professor of medicine/psychiatry of children and youth at the University of Tübingen.
Because this lecture was the last one in 2009 it was the day when the children have got their “diploma”. How nice to see the seriousness in the childrens’ faces…
Then we closed the day with a dinner in Tübingen’s old town.

Triple-Mentoring Partnership-project

We are happy that we got in touch with Kaunas’ Children's University as well as with its representatives Eglė and Skirmantas. After this meeting we are sure that we will have a fruitful partnership. The next meeting will take place in Kaunas in autumn 2009, probably during the second Children's University-series and together with the partners from Vilnius. In the meanwhile we keep staying in contact by email and phone calls – especially regarding the second Children's University-series in Kaunas but also concerning our “Triple-Mentoring Partnership-project” which we will set up with the University of Vilnius, the third partner of our Mentoring Partnership. Further experiences in both countries will cause new questions, new things to be discussed and hopefully new good ideas. Besides we (TU) are curious about the development of the national Lithuanian cooperation (of KTU and Vilnius University) so we are looking forward to get news about that as well as to hear from both of you!
