The grandson of Monsieur Hulot's Holiday

The austrian newspaper Der Standard featured a comment on the various "concerted cultivation" possibilites during the holidays by Karl Heinz Gruber (teaches comparative education at the University of Vienna) a couple of days ago. Within that Gruber criticises that offers for out of school learning are often only for families with academic background respectively the well educated middle class. He instances the Kinderuni Wien as one example of that.

Amazing computer modelling

The most intriguing movies published by Wired Science:

"The Department of Energy honored 10 of this year’s best scientific visualizations with its annual SciDAC Vis Night awards, at the Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing conference (SciDAC) in June. Researchers submitted visualizations to the contest, and program participants voted on the best of the best. From earthquakes to jet flames, this gallery of videos and images show how beautiful (and descriptive) visual data can be." (wired science)

How Can a Kid Participate at Your Project?

The Early Bird Gets the Worm?

We have already stressed the diversity of Children's University projects a couple of times and we will do this also in future. Associated with the different types of project also the infrastructural capacity of CU's are quite diverging. This ranges from very exclusive workshops with a few kids to real mass events with hundreds of children.

But how do we provide a fair chance to participate for the kids? Shall we follow a fundamental norm in "real life" and make "first come, first serve" to our motto? Is it allowed to make a selection? Is this against the principles of a free participation at Children's Universities? Or is it fair to let fate decide and pick the lucky ones out of the overwhelming mass of curious children.

There are examples for every approach I mentioned but I would be interested if a once adopted course is always the one to maintain.

Let us exchange expriences and write us some of your ideas.

CU - A Potential Hit Factory?

Songwriting for Kids

The University for Children in Graz/Austria held a CU lecture at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz on "Songwriting and Hits 2059". Manfred Rechberger of the Institute of Music Education showed methods to express and test the kids musical ideas with simple tools like a mobile phone. During the session he produced together with the children a "children's university rock song".

Is Your Children's University Already Producing Songs?

I would imagine that there are already a couple of other pieces of music around at the various CU's. It would be great if we compile a collection of these works here at EUCU.NET. Please search in the archives of your projects and send all the music files to me or upload it at your personal or project accounts and link to the music.

I am very curious about your contributions and what this will bring up.

Is this really the main objective of CU?

Torben Roug wrote on 14.12.2009, Torben Roug last edit on 14.12.2009:

After listening To Nick's several comments on the austrian School system, separating children for their literacy skills in an early age-I do not believe that the core of the problem, lies with in, what the CU's do -or does not do.

Themotivation for attending University eventually as a student , is not decided on a summer school program at the ageof 10anyway, butmay be a co-factor in the long run....if the educationalontology for the individual child/teenagersupportsa proper personal development of skills, and critical analytical compenteces.

It is not the objective of CU to make that significant impact to choose here and now, but merely to inspirechildren/teenagers toseek challenges inissues with in an academic field in the long run!
